Politics Outside of the Box

Many people come to this site because their views don't mesh with the major parties' talking points. Here are my top picks for such political outsiders.

If you feel unrepresented, it's probably because the U.S. only has two credible political parties. People have more than two sets of opinions, however! The problem is not a conspiracy between the major parties, bias by the media, or ballot access restrictions. The problem is our plurality based voting system. The fix? Score voting.

But even without a change in voting systems, third party politics is possible, albeit difficult. I have found two loopholes in our current system, and include them in my broader Business Plan for a New Political Party.

Libertarians and conservatives complain about big government. Liberals complain about concentrations of wealth. Well, it turns out that certain aspects of big government subsidize the very wealthy. Paid to be Rich exposes the hidden subsidies to the already wealthy.

Many people complain that there are no environmental questions in the current quiz. The reason is that I would have to add another dimension to include the environment. Environmentalism is not a left-right or authoritarian-libertarian issue. While hardcore environmentalism is usually associated with the left in the U.S., it doesn't have to be. One can make a strong conservative case for a carbon tax. A carbon tax is more conservative than the personal income tax or payroll taxes.

Many blue-collar Christians – the “Reagan Democrats” –are torn between the two major parties: the Republicans often favor the rich while the Democrats often favor non-Christians. A synthesis between lefty and Christian values can be found in God's Welfare System. The ideas therein could be the basis for a revived Religious Left.
